Diabetes:Advances is Treatment

This article tells of the new treatments coming out to help those with Diabetes. They say that there are new oral hypoglycemic agents that (along with some different lifestyle measures) has shown a 61% decrease in the development of type 2 diabetes. As far as type one goes, the article goes on to say that they are trying some new things like T-Cell immunomodulation therapy and beta cell regeneration. Unfortunately, other than that not much advancement has taken place for those with type one. This article is great because it tells you how the doctors diagnose diabetes. It goes in depth about the different things that make a person diabetic and tells about insulin treatments.

Inhaled Insulin Arrives

I thought this article was extremely interesting because of the advancement of inhaled insulin that I did not even no existed until I read this article. It was designed, in the UK, for people who do not want to use needles. Apparently the device looks like an inhaler and is extremely complex to use and they said doctors will spend a lot of time talking to patients about how it works. The inhaler cannot be used for people who have a lung misfunction or in smokers. I thought this was a pretty cool break through in the new technological advances in this disease and I do not believe many people even know much about it yet.

My topic

My main topic is: What happens to people that have Diabetes, and how do we recognize each type and fight this disease? I believe that these things are very important to know and because Diabetes is very common in today's world it gets looked over. I believe that because this disease is so wide spread, it should not be looked over. Instead, we should educate people in the different forms, how to recognize the symptoms, and how to fight the disease while having it and without it. I am interested in this topic for a few reasons. First, I have three people in my family with the disease that all got it in different points in their life. My dad got his type 1 Diabetes when he was a 20 year old college student. My little cousin, now 17, got his when he was born. Lastly, my Aunt was just diagnosed a few months ago with Type 2 Diabetes and she is about 47 years old. I am adopted so I have no idea if I have the gene for this disease or not, but I have seen what it can do and it is scary. This brings me to my second and final reason. I have seen my dad have what we call "reactions". These are scary times when his sugar gets to low (it can also happen when sugars are too high). He goes through a few stages. When you first notice him having the onset of a "reaction" he starts walking slow, talking in circles, and he repeats actions and words over and over again. When we notice this, we immediately try to give him food to bring up his blood sugar. We usually use a banana or orange juice with sugar. He usually refuses to realize he has a problem and will refuse the food. Next, he starts stumbling around and eventually reverts back to an infintile state. When this happens, he no longer understands what he is doing and won't remember any of it when he finally snaps out of it. Sometimes, he will be able to recall my moms name or my name and will shout it pretty menicingly. Other times he will talk about some sport and say something extremely funny that we laugh at later. This is about what I call the third stage. We usually get him out of it after this stage but there have been times where we werent able to. The next stage, he starts moaning and he starts using the "baby" way of rufusing food (which is turning his head away from it). Speech is usually out of the question and he can get very physical. He can't walk at this stage and there have been a few times where he has rolled straight off the bed or almost fell down the stairs. Its extremely scary for me and my mom and I know he hates putting us through this. At this stage, if he gets there, we call 911. Things like "reactions", I believe people need to know about. This disease is very real and very scary both to the persons family and to the person. It is also becoming more common in younger generations who do not understand the extent of the disease. I feel this is a very important topic and my audience will be meant for high school age to college age kids without this disease. I want to go through my personal experience with my dad and I also want to do a lot of research on the different forms of the disease. I want kids to know how to prevent it, and I want them to understand how to handle it if they ever got it. I want them to be able to recognize the signs and I want them to be able to fight it if they can.

I believe that this website is a good website and an asset to my research because it goes into detail about the main forms of diabetes. It won many awards for its site and it is also done by a university so I do trust their information. It was even debuted in a health magazine.

Before I read this webtext I did not even know this form of Diabetes existed. I do trust the website because after you read an article, it lists names of doctors who have read it before they posted it on their website. It also gives you a list of references where they got their information so you can trace it and decided whether they got it from credible sources or not. It is important to my research since I am researching the types of diabetes.

Provide Background For Issues: Diabetes is becoming more and more common and is showing up in the young and old. There are many different treatments and causes for it and no cure.

Summarize the purpose of the project: My purpose is to find out why people get it at different periods in life and to find out the best routs to take in treatment for the disease. Low blood sugars are a huge problem and trying to keep it up is just part of the battle.

What makes diabetes show up in different age groups? What is the difference between taking a shot and taking the pill? What are the differences of the two types of Diabetes? Why do people get diabetes?

My three topic suggestions would be (1) Diabetes (2) how water pollutants affect sea life (3) how apple is a leading innovator in technology.

My dad has diabetes and he got diagnosed at age 20. My little cousin, now 16, also has it but was diagnosed when he was born. It interests me because they all behave differently when their sugars are low and they all got it in different stages of their lives. What makes diabetes show up in different age groups? What is the difference between taking a shot and taking the pill? What are the differences of the two types of Diabetes? Why do people get diabetes?

I am extremely passionate about sea life. I am extremely interested in orca whales and bottle nosed dolphins. The rest of the ocean interests me too, but I am a fairly specific person. Recently I saw a documentary on how we are polluting the sea and it is endangering the orca whales. Why is this still happening when there are many rules about dumping pollutants in the sea? How exactly is this affecting ocean life? Does it affect their offspring as well? or were they born with certian immunities? Does this hurt their reproductive rate?

I guess I chose this topic because I am looking into getting a new Ipod and I have been researching it before I decide to buy. Apple has always been more innovative than Microsoft. Why is this? What is the secret to Apple's success? Why are the so ahead of the game that they leave Microsoft gasping for air? I'm not talking just about computers. I am also talking about programs and mp3s.
